Windows NT-2000 - OS - Restore the SAM database

Postby lmmtux » Wed Aug 22, 2012 10:01 pm

The SAM database is used to store local usernames and passwords. If it becomes corrupted, local users may not be able to log in. To fix it, follow these steps:

You can boot from the Windows 2000 installation CD and perform a repair from the repair console. The SAM database itself is stored as: %systemroot%\system32\config\SAM . There is a backup copy of the SAM database which is: %systemroot%\system32\repair\SAM. From the repair console, you can copy the SAM file in the repair folder over to the config folder:

In the repair console, run these commands:

  1. c:
  2. cd \windows\system32\repair\
  3. copy SAM ..\config\SAM

When prompted to replace the original SAM file, type "y" for Yes.

Reboot your PC, and you should now be able to log in since the backup copy of the SAM database was restored.
