The "Cups-PDF" printer that is installed by the "cups-pdf" package no longer produces PDF files that include embedded text. Instead, all PDF files printed with the Cups-PDF printer consist of images only without any embedded text. This means that PDF files produced with it cannot be searched.

Workaround:

Use the "Print to File" feature of CUPS instead which will produce a PDF file and has some additional options.

  1. In the application you wish to print to a PDF file, simply select File / Print as always.
  2. In the list of printers, select "Print to File".
  3. Select the Output Format as PDF, select the destination folder and enter a filename.
  4. Click "Print" and the PDF file will be written.
